Summer on the Delta
July is mid-way through summer on the Delta. The Delta summer starts as early as late April or early May. Memorial Day is the first long weekend. The 4th of July the next. A favorite activity is anchoring out at Mildred Island (a flooded island that is now a favorite anchorage spot). Taking the dogs to the beach in the kayak. Swimming, water skiing, barbequing, and sleeping with the lull of the rocking boat. Ah, summer.

One morning we were surprised to hear the whosh of hot air being released keeping a balloon aloft - what a pretty sight to wake up to as two hot air balloons traveled across our house and our bay.
July started out like any other July but on the last weekend of July we were given shocking news. Two bass fishermen were going boat-to-boat passing out flyers about a plan by Sacramento to install two gates blocking the primary navigation waterways between Discovery Bay and the rest of the Delta and from Bethel Island (another waterfront community) and Mildred Island. It didn’t seem possible that they could block the primary waterway. And no one knew about it. Amazing!
